  • Watch for Phishing Attacks! ~ Update!

One of our members has just told me that since the hack, he has had 2 phishing attacks and had to change his password that is ONLY used on our Forum. So, as always, be on the alert for anything fishy that might be going on! Please bear with us as Dave, John and I go through this process of getting us back and running safely again, and fully, as we contend with two totally different types of virus's at the same time! Best Regards, and Stay Safe!

An update on scams and phishing attacks. Since the advent of the Covid-19 virus, and the initiation of economic impact payments to millions of Americans, the number and types of scams or phishing attacks is greatly on the increase. So are attempts to access your social security account, your personal accounts and your computer. Recently, there have been attacks by telephone or email supposedly from the Social Security Administration, stating that your SS account has been compromised or that you have made some sort of illegal action regarding it.

    Check their website...

    https://www.ssa.gov/scam/

Another recent phishing scam is offering you to purchase certain software such as Windows Defender for certain amounts of money. You receive an email or phone call from someone indicating that they are with Microsoft (or whoever) and they tell you that your account (they don't say WHICH account!) has been charged $800 (or pick an amount) for the software and if you did not purchase it, you can get a refund from them. They want you to go to your computer and bring up a website so that they can process your "refund" to you. They may want you to bring up a "AnyDesk" website and log into it, or other remote access software. The whole idea is to gain access to your computer so they can "refund your payment" one that you may never made... Don't fall for this... It turns out that Microsoft Defender is FREE if you have Win 8.1 or Win 10! They just want access to your computer to steal your personal information. Be on the alert... Here is more information regarding this.

BTW, AnyDesk, like others, is a remote access program used legitimately by millions of IT professionals around the world, to remotely connect to their clients' devices and help them with technical issues. However, scammers try to misuse AnyDesk (or any other remote access software) to connect to your computer and steal data, access codes, and even money....

You, like me, and millions of others across this Country are being contacted by would be scammers, or phishing phone calls, emails or text messages impersonating federal, state, or local agencies in an attempt to gain your personal financial records... Don't fall for them... In phone calls, the trend seems to be that they call from a phone number in your local area code, or sub-prefix, in an attempt to give you impression that it is a local call, perhaps from a friend or neighbor... I just received this call from what appeared to be a local call, but I quickly determined that it was a phishing call and blocked it from calling me again. At least from that number. The subject of the contact can be far ranging, from anything, including possible legal problems you may have, to Medicare and the most recent one, from the CBP stating that a package with your name and address on it has been confiscated and to contact them. DO NOT RESPOND to that call... See the first link... Check out these links and protect yourself from these scammers...
