    An Emergency Support Team

Yesterday, I received a telephone call from one of our members who was out riding in his Tbird when it quit on him. Something went wrong with his ignition switch. He called me for help (which has happened before from other members on occasion). I was not able to provide him with the technical information that he needed to work on that switch. He wanted to get his beloved Tbird driving again so he could get it back home safely and not have to leave it out in public. It was getting late into the afternoon and he really wanted to get her going and get home with her. He did not want to flat bed it either, because of the possible damage this could cause to the car if the driver was not watching what he was doing on up loading or off loading the car.

So I told him I would see if I could get in touch with some of our more mechanically inclined members who have been down the road of trouble shooting the ignition switch, getting it out to work on it, etc.. I started looking for phone numbers of members that might be able to help. I knew Dave Dare was out of pocket, so I was out of luck there. I was able to get in contact with Jed Zimmerman, who gave me some good advice on how to get the ignition switch out. I was also able to contact Richard Hord, who was also able to help. I put the Tbird owner together on the phone. Richard was able to help him trouble shoot the problem, and get the car started and back home.

After this happened, I got to thinking that we need an assistance team to help each other out during times like this. Out on the road, Tbird breaks down, and the owner needs help in trying to fix the problem and get his Tbird back home to safety without having to tow it home.

So I propose creating an Emergency Support Team consisting of those members who are very good mechanics and don't mind taking a phone call during the day, evening, or weekend to help a fellow member out. We need a good number of members on the team to assure that I can get in contact with at least one of you at any time. I just have a few phone numbers of members that I know who really know their stuff when it comes to these old Birds of ours.

I propose to call this team the Emergency Support Team or EST. If you can think of a better name, let me know. I thought about calling it the Emergency Action Team or EAT, but I was concerned that to many of you would end up at Denny's or McDonalds' and be at the wrong place when I needed you!

If you think this is a good idea, and want to join the team, just send me your phone numbers, home and cell, in an email or a PM and I will create a team from that. I can give your phone number to the member who needs help and he can call you. Then I will be able to pick and choose someone to call if someone else has a breakdown and needs help. We wont be asking you to jump on a plane and fly in to where the breakdown is, tool box in hand, or jump into your Tbird and drive there. Just be available, if called, to provide armchair support over the phone and help a fellow member get his Tbird going again and home safely so it can be worked on there. What say you???

      An Emergency Support Team

Thanks, Richard and Jed! Now we have three members on the team, including me! Anyone else want to jump in and help out? I would like to get a good number of people on the team, in case others are not available when needed.

          And Then There Were 4!

Thanks, Dave! I have added you to the list. We need some more. I would like to have about a dozen of you on the list because not all of you will be available during the day, or evening or on weekends. It would be good to have several available when others are at work, or away. If you want to join us, just send me a PM or email with your phone numbers...

One thing that I always do, is to bring my Shop Manual and some tools with me, when I´m out driving.

Anders, that is a great idea of always having the shop manual with you when you are out in your Tbird! Tools are important, of course, but having the shop manual along for the ride is a very good idea!

We now have 5 members on the EST, with Gary ~ 1946hamm joining us. I am looking for more! I doubt we will have to access the team very often, but it will be good to have one to fall back on when a fellow member has a problem and needs help getting that Tbird back home safely.

Hi Bill! Yes, it can be difficult diagnosing something over the phone, but it sure worked out okay over the weekend! Both Jed and Richard were able to play car doctor and diagnose the problem of getting the ignition switch out. Then Richard was able to advise him how to fix it temporarily to get him back home with the car.

Shoot me your phone numbers (cell phone also, if you don't mind) in an email or a PM and I will add you to the list! Thanks!

And now there are 6 members on the team!

                        hi Ray

Count me in. One of the last things any one wants to do is either abandon their TBird or have it towed.

Do you somehow want phone #s ?? Locations??

Thanks guys. This site is awesome!!!!

Just a quick note to express my appreciation for all the assistance everyone has given me with my T bird. I am not too comfortable with diagnosis and assistance. I wish I was but I am learning. It helps immensely to know there may be a support team out there when we go cruising. How do you plan to get the central switchboard number out there?

                              Thanks again.
