    What I Did This Weekend

Today was our 2nd Annual Ovarian Cancer 5K Race & Walk event. We had about 700 people Run/Walk today. It is a CHIP Timed event and we have some very serious runners. We had many different groups running in memory of their loved ones.

Yesterday, I went to pick up our "race start" car that was provided by one of our sponsors, a big local auto dealership. It was a 2009 Saturn Sky! It was supposed to be a red one, but he said they are selling these neat little putt-putts like hotcakes and they sold my red one out from underneath me!

I took my grandchildren for a spin in it last night and then got up at 5am this morning, backed her out of my garage and took off the for race. I put on the Memorial booth in memory of those women who have passed away due to ovarian cancer, as my wife Faye did 11 years ago. Here is the link to my ovarian cancer website. Please share it with the women in your lives because the information there could save their lives, as it has many other women over the 11 years it has been running. You can find it with this link.

You can find more information about the Saturn Sky at this link. I am told since Roger Pensky bought Saturn that they will not make a Sky in 2010, but hope to bring it back in 2011. It is one neat, fun car to drive.

Tomorrow, instead of riding around in Black Beauty, it is back to earth as I get out Red Rose from her shed and tool around the back and front yard giving them a manicure. They need it after all the rain we got!

Also at our event, our security team owns an old Chevy police car. You will see a picture of it also. Here are some pix.

    Thanks for your posting

    Ray:

Thanks for the posting. I read the web link honoring your wife. I teach Human Anatomy and Physiology for nursing students at college. I would like to use information from the link you provided when I teach my unit on ovarian cancer. I found that the subtle symptoms on your link were much more descriptive that many of those listed in other sources. Thank you so much for sharing.

      What I Did This Weekend

      Hi Rich!

You certainly have my permission to use the information on the website! I see you are teaching college nursing students. I want to give you an idea that we use here in San Antonio. We have an arm of our group that started when I was a member of the Alamo Ovarian Cancer Alliance. That has since merged with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition - San Antonio division, of which I am a Board member and webmaster.

This group is called The Survivors Teaching Students program. A couple of our members are Nurses, and they, along with members of our organization, who are ovarian and/or breast cancer survivors, are invited in to local area nursing and doctors teaching schools to tell their story about surviving ovarian cancer. This has had a very positive and dramatic effect on the students as they are hearing, many for the first time, what those survivors experienced while trying to have ovarian cancer detected in the first play. And what happened to them during the treatment and after treatment phases. It has given them additional insight into what to say to or ask of their future patients who they suspect might be battling ovarian cancer.

I get a copy of the student critiques each time they put this seminar on, a number of times a year, and I have never seen a negative comment yet. They are all impressed with what our Nurse members have to say about this terrible disease, and especially what our Survivors have to say about their diagnosis and treatments.

I would strongly suggest that you consider finding some good Nurses to help you start a group like this in your area. In fact, I would also suggest that you share this idea with others in your field across the country. You and they, certainly should be able to find some good Survivors who are willing to tell their story of their battle with ovarian cancer in your area. There are two NOCC chapters in Minnesota which, if I recall is where you are located. Here is the link.

Finally, I want to say that I was going to make this a PM to Rich, but decided not to in case there are other members out there who are also teaching nursing or doctor students. So please bear with me. The life we help save might be someone you know and love..

Thanks for the pic and info. I read an article http://ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=2...&newsdep=25844 that Swedish-born women more likely to develop ovarian cancer.

My ex vife seems to have some sort of early stage that have not yet being developed into cancer, but she is going through some treatment to avoid it. I sure hope she does. She is not my vife since 20 years but still a good friend and most of all, my boys mother.

Also GREAT to see a picture of you Ray! Love that yellow ( what else?....) cap

          What I Did This Weekend

          Hi Anders!

Thanks for the information regarding Swedish women and OC. That was an interesting read. It seems they have not been able to determine why this is happening. It would be great to know, and I hope they find out. I hope your ex will come through her treatments with flying colors.

I also saw the picture of Emmy on Our Rides. She is such a cutie with those big blue eyes! Thanks for the update!

As for my yellow cap, you probably have not seen the rest of the outfit that I have been known to wear on occasion when I am out with Yellow Rose! Lol....
