    Just thinking

We all know that the GFC has caused many money worries all over the world, and I am in constant awe at the tips & advice that is freely given on this forum.

Then I started thinking, I wonder how many $$$'s members have saved in mechanic's & other fees as a result. Be a substantial amount I reckon!

So true, Bill. Our engines may not get the best mileage or the most hp, but they sure are easy to work on.

Tonight I'm building my 292 Y-Block. I put both heads on, and went through the steps torquing each head bolt. I got to the last head and the last bolt, and the torque wrench seemed to go on for longer than it should, then, SNAP! Right on the end of the head, the bolt broke right at the threads, inside the block.

Pulled the head off, drilled a hole in the broken piece and backed it out using an EZ-out. Set me back ~1/2 hour; no biggie. Then I bolted my rocker shafts on and started adjusting the lash. One was acting funny. Spun the pushrod and sure enough, it was bent. Again, no biggie.

I probably saved over US$1,500 by doing this engine myself. I know everything is right. Like everyone else, I learned from the good mechanics who loved building engines and were eager to share their knowledge for free. All I did was ask questions and try doing for myself.

None of the modern Tech's want to deal with an engine that doesn't have a computer hookup. Consequently, it's hard to find good mechanics for classic cars, even here in Detroit! No biggie. We got peeps on Squarebirds. - Dave Dare
