removing mirror glued onto windshield?

Hi
this is off topic but everyone here is so knowledgable so here it goes:

I'm helping a buddy work on his car and we're trying to remove the little puck glued to the middle of his windshield. It's where the rear view mirror is mounted.

Has anyone done this?
will acetone or something like that dissolve the glue?

Casey, you might try a straight edge razor blade held in a scraper handle and use it as a chisel/pry tool by gently tapping the blade edge flush against the glass at the glue seam. The puck should just simply pop off with very little effort. Use acetone then on a rag to scrub off the adhesive/glue residue. The glue used is typically the same stuff as super glue. Lacquer thinner may also be used for a solvent, but be careful not to drip any chemical on the dashboard vinyl or plastic. Acetone is more user friendly then lac thinner, but sometimes lac thinner is needed to cut the adhesive/glue.

I got the thing off.


I put a lot of protection on the dash and used some "enamel reducer" along the edges. Let it soak in and squirted some more on there.
It ate enough glue out so that I could get a razor blade scraper under the edge and it popped right off with no residue or marks on the glass.

Then I screwed in the overhead stock mirror and now I can see what's in front of me!!
Usually a lady on a cell phone putting on makeup in my lane headed toward me...

so, maybe it was better I couldn't see out the windshield.
