Jon, this is one of the coolest posts in a long time. You certainly got my creative gears spinning. Trouble for me is, I'm in the city and I gotta keep things small, light, and slow.
I'm thinking more on the lines of a motored tricycle using a small (Mustang) car battery to keep it going all day long. Bicycle parts are everywhere so this could be done very cheaply using 3/4" or 1" electrical thinwall (EMT) for the rear wheels frame and battery tray.
Robin & I are new grandparents (again) so I have time to hone my ideas. - Dave
