McCallion was first elected in November 1978, and is the longest serving mayor in the city's history. Since her first term, she has been a successful candidate in 12 municipal elections; having been acclaimed twice and re-elected 10 other times. Her supporters gave her the nickname "Hurricane Hazel" because of her outspoken and indomnitable political style.
In 2005 McCallion was runner-up for the World Mayor Award, and was made a Member of the Order of Canada. She has also been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the country's highest individual honour, for her role in bringing German companies to Canada.
