Jiri-Rock&Roll Firebird - The Rest Of The Story!

I have received some more email from Jiri, our new Czech Republic member regarding how he fell in love with the '59 Squarebird. The '58, or '60 did not float his boat, but after seeing that '59 Convertible with Tonneau Cover in Austria, (see it in the For Sale Forum) that did! He asked me for some pix of Yellow Rose, so I sent him some. Here is some of what he had to say.

    "Hello Ray,

thank you for your quick reply and a warm welcome.

Regarding your bird, as I wrote previously, it's absolutely stunning and it's a great inspiration for me in the way where I would like to go with my bird. I spent several hours googling t-bird paint styles on the web and did not find anything even close to yours. You must have a great imagination to create such a beauty. As I don't have it, I go in the way of inspiration I'm going to chose very similar paint style to yours if you don't mind. I already tried several color combinations from yours on photos I found on flickr (attached). (I will post here below what Rose could have looked like in Jiri's mind and what his might look like!)

I'm a great fan of US cars culture and I don't miss any US cars gathering in 300mile range from where I live (Prague). This year I'm going to Sweden (Vasteras) and Carlisle corvette meeting in August in the US for the first time. (Hopefully he will meet up with some of our Swedish and US members!)

At the end of my mail I would like to share my short T-bird story with you. I knew about existence of T-birds mainly from the Grease movie and saw a few '57s here in the Czech. Wasn't too exciting for me though as I was always more Vette, Mustang and Firebird guy. I was looking to buy me a '73 corvette for the last 6 months. This weekend everything changed. I PERSONALLY saw a '59 T-bird convertible with a tonneau top in Austria big gathering Traun 500. Since that moment everything changed - I must have that car at no matter cost (and I don't have money for spending really). By heart I'm in the late '50s US era, love Elvis and play Rock&Roll. There is no better car to suit my feelings than a '59 T-bird. Not a '58, not a '60, just '59.

I got home on Sunday and started to look for one in the US as there are few available in Europe but at cost that is far out of my reach. It took me about an hour and I found her! I am in the middle of preparations and if everything goes right, I will have her home at mid August.

Here is one thing I would like to ask you. There are several companies here in CR who arrange car transportation from the US, for very high cost I must say My car is located in the US East Coast). Don't you have any dependable friends or contacts who could help to arrange the shipment to Europe for me? Of course I know it won't be for free, still I feel as enthusiasts they might be willing to help here… anyhow.

So that's pretty much it for now. Take care and hopefully I'll hear from you soon. Best regards, Jiri"

Now, here is where we might be able to help Jiri. If anyone on the Forum has moved a vehicle overseas, especially from the East Coast, please email him and give him the contact information on the company you made the move with, and whether or not they are a good one to deal with. His email address is: firebird@email.cz If you can help, even those of you down under who have moved cars, please do.

Now for what Jiri sees his '59 might look like when he gets it! He did a great job of photoshopping Rose! She looks absolutely stunning in Red and White! She looks great in Casino Cream and White and now I know what she would have looked like if I had stayed with that color. And in Tweety Bird Yellow and White, I see why so many people love her in that color. But the Red and White is breathtaking! Thanks for sharing, Jiri!

        Overseas Cargo Shippers

I would like to hear from those members in Europe who have had cars shipped to them from the East Coast of the USA. For one thing, I would like to create a listing (as I have for USA Car Transport Companies which is at the bottom of the TRL) of overseas car shipping companies that our membership can trust and count on to get their new acquisition there in one pieces. And those to stay away from...

In addition to that, new member, Jiri, in the Czech Republic, just bought a '59 Convertible from the East Coast and is looking for a car shipping company he can trust to get his Tbird there. I know that a good number of our European members have had cars shipped to them from the US. Please post and give us some input as to who you used, how good (or badly) they did in getting your Tbird to you in one piece. He needs to know who he can trust and who he should stay away from.

If I get that information from ya'll I will put it together and make it available in the Technical Resource Library for future use. You can either post it here, or if you would rather not, send it to me in email or a Private Message (PM).

Jiri-Rock&Roll Firebird - The Rest Of The Story!

I emailed every European member of this Forum I could think of (several dozen) asking for information on what company they used to ship their cars to them in the past. I have yet to get ONE answer from anyone..... I am not going to be able to build a listing of reliable overseas shipping/cargo companies without any input from those of you who have done this before...

Hi there, just answered in another thread for Jiri about parts needed. there are plenty of shippers, can't name one now out of the blue but I will look for one on the net. Many of them are country specific meaning that for instance a company run by Fins in the U.S. are specialized in shipping cars to Finland, Germans in to Germany etc. there companies in NY, Florida etc. but don't know a company specialized in shipping to Czech. But since Czech is in the EU, shipping to Germany for instance and then picking it up there should be no problem.
I don't have any personal experience with any shipping company since I bought my 60 conv. in Germany but parts etc. shipped through a friend of mine from my previous place of living and my previous company in California by sea container together with company parts back to Europe once or twice a year, saves on shipping and duty costs.
Czech and also here in Finland we have the luck that we live close to the Russian border (50km for me) and can buy gas there for 60 euro cent per liter as to 1,65 per liter here. Boy I remember my first car in the US in 1977 a '70 plymouth fury3, gas was 49cent per gallon and some said, why a gas guzzler since the gallon price was only 29 cents 2 years before.

              Hi
I have no personal experience of using shipping companies so I am looking through my back copies of 'Classic American' magazine for readers experiences/viewpoints on this subject-one person had had their car joy-ridden at some point but they did not say who the shipper was-I will post if I find any more information

                Dear fellow T-Birders,

I'm glad I can announce that after more than 3 months after the lucky 'click' on eBay my Bird is finally in the garage . Was a looong and tough way getting her there through the tax office, making her run, and even riding her for the first time to the garage was literarily adventurous!

Have to admit that the car has looots of things to fix, rebuild and adjust. I got to laugh at this point because the Bird leaks literarily every possible fluid (oil, gas, brake, coolant...) .

Maybe I'm not prepared for what's comming with her but I'm 100% sure if I solve every single piece of problem in time, I will be very happy after that.

So, as I am a technical type of guy but totall novice when it comes to cars and especially classic cars, please - cross fingers for me so not lot of things turn out to be serious or complicated to solve and be patient with me when I will be putting those tons of questions here on the forum during my rebuild.

I'll start with one immediately - can you advise any technical/repair/manual kind of book as a must have for any rebuilder - either for the Squarebirds or generally for any classic cars that I should start with? I already ordered the '1959 Ford Thunderbird Shop Service Repair Manual Book'. Maybe there's something more to be aware about...

                So, let's do it! 3...2...1...here I start...

Jiri-Rock&Roll Firebird - The Rest Of The Story!

Congratulations, Jiri! Thanks for posting the pix of her. She looks nice and I can see the tonneau cover in one of the pix. In addition to the '59 Shop Manual, you might want to consider getting a '59 Electrical Assembly Manual, '59 Body & Interior Trim Assembly Manual, the Thunderbird Restoration Manual, the Reproduction Illustration Manual, and perhaps the Specifications & Features Manual. If you did not get the '59 Owners Manual with the car, you might want it also. Now, I would have said that you should get the '59 Wiring Diagrams Manual but that is in the Technical Resource Library (TRL), along with the 1958 Top Repair & Adjustment Manual, which should be the same for the '59. With these manuals, and the help of the guys on the Forum, you should be able to tackle those leaks and other problems and get them fixed. I bet you have been turning heads when you drive her there in Prague! Remember, any time you want to access the TRL just find one of my posts and you will see the link to it under my signature element.

I hear ya, mine does too. One day I might get the time & money to do something about some of it.

Congrats on your new ride, she looks great. I bet she causes a stir there in Prague.
