See? Now if I show this to Robin, she would quickly pack our bags and move to Sadalia, without a second thought. Then she would write 'wish you were here' cards to all our kids. All our lives we lived in Michigan but the long cold winters are starting to wear us down.

Going back a few posts, you mentioned that you made a die for the '61 Catalina door. What did you make it from, steel? The contours looked like a perfect match. Could you show a picture of the upper and lower dies? Thanks in advance. - Dave

Just kidding, I bought it for parts. This is what happens when you mix gasoline fumes with a space heater. This '40 a 65-66 Mustang, 2 Model T's one of them was a 1 owner Brass T and a dozen or so antique tractors and a very large building reduced into a pile of rusted metal.

The'40 came from California. I understand that the owner payed $27,000 for it. He lost money twice. The car was misrepresented as a good car which the pictures show you it wasn't and he didn't have enough insurance to replace the monetary value.

It has a good flathead in it. Still has clean oil in the block, turns over and somehow gas is still in the tank. frame appears to be good and some other parts and pieces. The motor is what i really wanted. I plan to go thru it and replace the chevy that is currently adapted to a 39 trans in my '40 coupe. That's how I got it. I wouldn't dream of ever doing a transplant like that.

It had 2 batteries. 1 6 volt and one 12volt that looks like a lawn mower battery. Don't even have a clue why other than it has 2 under dash heaters after market gauges, some kind of funky horn.

All 4 fenders ,trunk lid and grille halves ,patch panels door handle opening trunk handle opening and homemade bumper gravel deflectors are all brass spot welded together then a thick coat of bondo hid all of it's sins.

The owner of the Merc didn't want the old style heater so he asked if I could make a new cover to hide the hole in the firewall. The upper radiator support was missing and I made that also. Slipped some 4" lowering blocks under it too.

'40 Ford front fender braces

I need some fender braces for my '40. You can buy new ones (repop) for $75.00 a pair plus shipping. So a $100.00 let's say. It's my car and I hate to buy anything I can make. Material wise I used left over pieces so no cost there. Some welding , but nothing to amount to anything. So far they are free. I have about 3 hours total in the first one and will probably have 30 minutes less in the second one. So 5 and 1/2 hours total.


Yep $100.00 ain't that bad for new ones and they come painted chassis black.


I was able to use a good one from a car I'm working on for a pattern. I laid out some paper with magnets and traced the pattern out. Transferred it to a piece of metal and cut it out with tin snips. Marked where the beads went and put them in. Rolled through the slip roll for the curve and tipped the edges on the bead roller and finished them out with a hammer and dolly. Took some more paper and traced the brackets and bent them in the vise. Punched some spot weld holes in them and welded them up. I made 2 of everything. I need the other side to. So with the parts already cut for the other side I figure I will save about 30 minutes on the next one.
