    Oil dipstick

I just read on the facebook group "58 59 60 Ford Thunderbird Square Birds 1958 1959 1960" a note about oil dipstick lengths.
    Never heard of that before.
    Is that correct?

Eric, the answer to your question is in the Technical Resource Library (TRL). Bring it up, do a Ctrl F (F=Find) and type in oil dipstick length. It should take you right to it! Here is what it says.

352ci Squarebird Oil Dipstick Length ~ Prior to 4/1/60
According to the Ford MPC, the dipstick should be:
19.59 inches (49.7586cm) Shield to End
18.59 inches (47.2186cm) Shield to Add
17.55 inches (44.577cm) Shield to Full

    T.S.B. 443
B8A-6750-B 1958-1960 Oil Dipstick Length Prior to 4/1/60
    A - 17.10" B - 17.86" C - 18.32" D - 19.96"

    Ford MPC reading
Shield to Full - 17.55" Shield to Add - 18.59" Shield to End - 19.59"

So there is a slight difference in length for the B8A-6750-B oil dipstick between the TSB 443 and what the Ford MPC states.

6 Quarts (with new filter) will read overfill with the "old" style dipstick. it was off a little over 3/4 of an inch. Some people just scribed a new line .800 above the full mark.

I finally had a look at this dipstick.
The one I have in the car is close to the B8A-6750-B on the picture I posted above, except for the overall length.
            It is marked C7A1-6750-A
It seems to be the one that gives the low level.
The dimensions in the TRL are even lower.
Now, of course, this suppose we have the right tube on the engine !

When I replaced the oil pan gasket, I noticed the FULL mark was roughly in the middle of the oil pump. So about 1.5" below the oil pan/block junction. Does it means anything?

If your dipstick part number starts with C7 that means it is a 1967 part and is not the original dipstick.

I believe you are correct in that FE oil dipsticks are mated to the listed dipstick tube part as well.

Does anyone with a '58 to '60 352 FE equipped Bird have a measurement for the exterior oil dipstick tube length?

I cannot help you, as I do not have such an engine in my '60.

Well 3 years is decent on non urgent matters. I have urgent ones that are in the works for more than that !

The bottom line on this dipstick affaire is that the FULL mark is about 1.5" below the oil pan/block junction. Does it means anything?

The only urgent matters are matters of life and death. There is nothing urgent about an automobile forum run by volunteers.
