I have some annoying squeaking in the front suspension. I replaced the front shocks, as one was leaking, but still squeaking. Ball joints look ok, no vibrations or clunks, car steers and drives ok. I am thinking it is the upper control arm bushings which may be original. I see that replacement kits are made, but how involved is this job? Do the upper arms have to come off the car for this, which means the coil spring must be removed first? I am aware of coil spring dangers, I have a tool I used years ago on a Mcpherson strut car (threaded clamps that go on the outside with shafts through them), not sure if it will be useable here.

Yes, the coil spring has to be removed and yes, it is a dangerous job if you don't use the correct spring compressor. Refer to page 3-11 in the shop manual. It has a picture of the type of spring compressor you should use.
