  • Tie rods

I'm converting my 1964 shoe brakes to disk brakes. My question is are the 64 and 65 tie rods the same? I'm using a 65 spindle and the original 64 drive link. Thanks for the help, Larry.

None of the 1964 steering components are the same as 1965-66. You need the 1965-66 tie rods, drive link, pitman arm and idler arm and bracket. Trying to mix any of the components is a recipe for disaster.

Larry, consider giving Clint66 a call. Clint has a number of Flairbird parts cars and may have the parts John said you will need. His number is 507-259-6892.

Thanks for the help. I already bought spindles, backing plates, lower control arms, from a 65 parts car. New parts are rotors, bearings, calipers, rubber brake hoses. Now my question is do I buy 65 or 64 outer tie rods to go from spindles to the tie rod ajuster? I hope this more clearer. Ha, I think I just answered my question. 1965 tie rods should fit a 1965 spindle and ajuster. (TALK ABOUT RED FACED]. Thanks again, Larry.

          Larry,

Did you read my response. I was pretty clear about what you need.

Well John, I guess I'm being told two different things. Some say I don't need to change the drag link, pitman arm or the idler arm. I do not want a disaster. Just don't want to waist money if I don't need to. Thanks John, Larry.

The Ford parts book is pretty clear. None of the 1964 steering parts are compatible with the 1965 spindles. When they went to disc brakes in 1965 Ford completely redesigned the steering. You can try and make them work but I doubt your steering will be safe.
