Replacing gas tank 1964, can't remove filler tube. Does anyone have a source for a tool, other than fabricating one? Thanks

I've never seen an off the shelf tool. The shop manual describes how to make one. Maybe I've just been lucky but I've replaced a number of them and never had much problem getting the tube out. Usually after removing the screws it's just a matter of rotating it and pulling on it.

You might also consider spraying the filler tube where it meets the tank with WD-40 or something similar to that. Maybe that will help break it loose and allow you to twist, turn and pull on it to pull it out.

There's all kinds of adapters that you can use on a slide hammer to grab onto the upper end and pull it out. Once the three screws are removed at the top of the tube the only thing holding it in place is the friction from the O ring that seals the outside of the tube to the inside of the tank fitting.
It is a double walled tube, and the outer wall is visible in the trunk, so a large pipe wrench on it will help you turn it and break it free.Comment
