How many degrees of timing on my 62

I want to set the timing on my 62 with a 390. The shop manual says 8 degrees of initial timing. I am wondering what the total timing should be and what rpm should I check it at?

Normal timing is 6 degrees BTDC. Most of us run slightly advanced at about 8-10 degrees BTDC. If you get pinging back it off slightly. You need to set the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected. Plug the hose going back to the carburetor. You should run it at normal operating temperature at about 500-600 rpm.
