  • NOS Disaster - Almost

I bought a freshly rebuilt engine for my 60 Vert. from a private sale. Hand cranked it over and it felt great. It came with a lot of parts, carb, distributor, and an oil pump drive shaft that was broken off on one end. When I started to get the engine ready for installation and inserted the new oil pump drive shaft, I said a few nasty words when I heard it hit the bottom of the oil pan! Pulled the oil pan & retrieved the drive shaft. With the engine upside down I noticed the broken off piece of the old oil pump drive shaft. Then I understood why the new shaft went to the bottom of the pan. Next thing was to try to turn the oil pump by hand with a socket and an extension. It was locked up solid. Removed and disassembled the pump. The factory grease inside the pump was hard as a rock! Lots of soaking in gas and brushing finally got the new pump to work. Better to find the problem now than later!

So much for "freshly rebuilt".....good thing you found the problem.

I think whoever rebuilt it bought a NOS oil pump for the rebuild.
The engine looks just rebuilt with the oil pan off.

Same engine more problems the freshly rebuilt engine for my 60 Vert, had a rod knock and low oil pressure. Pulled the engine, removed the pan and found all of the connecting rod bearings were loose on the crankshaft. After a lot of investigation, I found the rod journals were .030 under, not the .010 written on the crankshaft. Both the main and rod journals were .030 under. So much for a cheap engine, and I don't have the contact info to give the guy that sold it to me a piece of my mind!
