Hello all, working on the body today, removed the cowl vent and I noticed the wiper “shafts” appear to be epoxied in or some sort of water barrier, is this normal?

Yes, that's normal. Back in the day they used a product called Dum-Dum to seal against water. I would remove it and replace it with a silicone based sealer.

Thank you! While most of this Tbird is intact and complete, there is a few questionable repairs I have noticed lol. I still have to figure out the wiper schematics (how the cables connect) I received the car with the pump and center “pulley” that work the wipers in the trunk. Depending on my plan I might go without. Right now engine bay work and exterior.Comment

This might be a good time to replace the OEM wipers with electric ones. See the Technical Resource Library regarding them... I replaced mine with electric wipers and never looked back....

Ray good idea to convert to electric. It would prevent the " fluttering " effect of the wipers when under load going up a hill with lack of psi in the linesDano Calgary,Alberta Canada

I’m looking at the TRL on the wiper motor install, I see that it is most likely a galaxie, any chances the metal arms also can be incorporated? I have 4 cables hanging down with a couple of pulleys in the drivers side and like I said the rest was in the trunk (vacuum motor and another set of pulleys). Would much rather have the metal arms than try to figure this cable/pulley system.Comment

Robert, the section in the TRL on electric wipers also had information on installing this electric motor in the Squarebirds. One link was written by Kev in England, who had a Tbird he was installing it on at that time. The fact that your cables and pulleys are hanging down is probably going to complicate things for you. That is why Kev said to wrap them in tape so they stay in the position they were when you replace the wiper motor. It may be difficult to figure out how to put them back into the proper position again. Here is the actual link on removing the OEM wiper motor...

Yes! Worse yet is this is how it came to me, if I had a visual or one of the 500 +/- pictures I’ve taken I would be in better shape. The dash on the TRL doesn’t appear to be a 58-60 that’s why I thought I would ask about the inner wiper arms/linkage. I’m good with adding the electric motor for sure, just need to figure the schematics before I buy it, if I can’t fix it I might just go without.Comment

Robert, as I said.... One link pertains to only Squarebirds. Dave ~ simplyconnected, also wrote his on how to do this on a Big Ford.. Here are a couple of pix taken when the conversion from OEM to electric wipers was done on my 1959 Tbird... Maybe they will help..

Thank you Ray, at least I now have some guidance to start with, hopefully it was just the motor that was bad, why it was disconnected. I’ve been researching later 50’s Fords may buy some linkages and see if I can get something to work. Seems like I have all the pieces and see where the main transmission (this part was sitting in the trunk with the motor) attaches in the inner dash area. I have the dash apart now so best time to address it.Comment

Robert, perhaps John ~ jopizz, can be of some assistance to you in helping you sort out the proper arrangement of the pulleys, and drive belts for the wipers. I know one thing for sure and that is after making the switch to electric wipers I would never go back to vacuum.. If you go the electric route, do NOT mount the wiper switch snug up against the instrument panel. You need to back off the knob slightly because it moves in and out a bit. Some have made the mistake of snugging it up against the panel and then it does not work and they think there is something wrong with the motor.. Nope, just a mistake made in snugging it up to tightly against the panel. Yes, now would be a great time for you to sort this out...
