    trans clunk

What is the fix for a clunking sound from transmission as you stop for a red light? Don't tell me just run the light to avoid the clunk, I tried that and my wife was not happy!

Does it feel internal like a rough downshift or an external clunk. An internal clunk could just be too high of an idle speed or misadjusted kick down linkage. If it feels external it could be a worn motor or transmission mount.

A bad u-joint can also cause a clunking on deceleration.

Thanks for responding guys. Feels like a rough down shift as car approaches a stop. The clunk is minimized if I slow down gradually and slowly for the light.

Don't think idle is too high as the car doesn't really move forward if you take foot off the brake. Would misadjusted kick down linkage require a trans specialist? Moving forward, shifting is very smooth.

Refer to the shop manual in the transmission section under throttle linkage adjustment. It's not difficult. If that doesn't help it may be something internal like the valve body.

you just turn it 1 or 2 times drive it see how you like it. repeat or turn the other way. Also i agree it could be a u joint.

If you haven't found the problem yet, as others have mentioned check the Universal joints.
