I have a question about my constant voltage regulator on my 60 t-bird. I just bought a new one from bird nest input is good 12 volts but the output is a constant 5 volts is that normal?

Hey Mike, I thought the output was an oscillating 0-6vlts, but I might be wrong. The reason why you have a CVR unit is because back then, Ford was using 6vlt gauges in their cars and they needed something to drop that constant 12v from the battery down to 6v for the gauges. So that explains why the 5v. I do know this, and that is if you are ever poking around under the dash with tools, make sure you have disconnected the battery. Failure to do so, might cause you to accidently short out your CVR unit, and you will be facing several hundred dollars in getting the Bird Nest or others to repair the gauges and replace the burnt out wiring.... I am speaking from experience, since my mechanic once forgot to disconnect the battery and shorted my CVR unit out and fried the wiring on those 6v gauges....

If it's solid state it will put out a constant 5 volts. If it's analog it will pulse.
