Default Wanted To Buy: steering box

I have a '58 Squarebird with (for whatever it is worth) power steering, COM and 352.

I would like to buy a steering box for it.

My goal is to do whatever is needed to refurbish the one I buy, then swap out the old (badly worn) one.

thanks!
john

I swapped out my old steering box with a rebuilt one. The service is sold through Rock Auto, and our members get a discount. You pay for the rebuild plus a core charge (which I recall was very expensive) and then mail back your core in the box that the rebuild came in.Once they get the core they reimburse you.

I did check them but could not find anything that said
they went back to the 1958-60 TBirds. Do you know if they refurbish those years as well?

(I think I saw a $350 core deposit . . .)

thanks for your time and help!

That won't fit his '58. All the steering boxes that RockAuto has for 58-64 Thunderbirds is a return and rebuild. You have to send them your part to rebuild. Maybe you bought one before they ran out of rebuilt units.

found it. Did not appreciate "steering gear" for what it was.

Questions: do you get your own back, overhauled? What kind of turnaround time?

Thanks much!

You can also try here.

However I would call first and see if he can give you a time frame when he can have it done. According to Carl Heller he hasn't been that quick with his turnaround times lately. I had him do a power steering valve for me and it took quite a long time to get it back. That was about three years ago.

For some reason I read 61, not 58. Here's the box for your 58: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/f...ring+gear,7416

Lares 8572

For this model, you send your part in and it gets rebuilt.
