Hi Guys

I was last on the site a couple of months ago asking advice regarding my broken 352 engine either to rebuild or refit a 430.
In the end the conclusion was to rebuild the 352. I have got a top notch guy over hear who specialises in old American car engines and he only lives 10 min drive from where i live in Newcastle, UK. He has it all stripped down cleaned ready for new paint. His finished projects are imaculate like brand new.
It required a new cam all new bearings ect. The crank was salvagable along with the pistons. Im no expert with engine terminoligy but Dick has it all under control.

I am going to give her a full new coat of paint and i fancy two tone. The car is a hardtop and was all origianlly blue with blue interior. when i bought the car it was cream in colour and not the best finish. I fancy an off white hint of cream main colour with a small amount of very light powder blue as a second colour, not sure what areas to paint what colour.

Does anyone have any recomendations or pictures with regards to a two colur paint job. The interior will remain blue and i have painted the engine bay black. Its all coming together slowly, still a lot of work to do and should be back on the road early next summer.

I hoped you saved those RARE 430cid motor mount brackets too....

I'm going to stick my neck out and say... ain't no way those pistons should be re-used because the bores should be machined and honed.

Rarely do cams wear out unless the wrong oil was used or the heat treat on the cam was wrong. New cams also need new lifters. ..my tuppence. - Dave Dare

normal shop practice is to bore the cylinder if more than .010" tapre. That means measuring a t the bottom of the cylinder and then at the top, where the top compression ring travels. That is where the most wear generally is. I have used .020" oversize rings and filled the ends to get a proper end gap if the cylinder is at the high end of .010". I agree everything NEW is usually best, but actually, if you build an engine using Ford wear limits, you won't go wrong. I love those old 352's, had a 1958 bird dwith one of the early 352's, machined combustion chambers and solid cam. Great set of heads, similar to 427 mid riser if I remember right. I used to put 1958 430 valves in the early 352 heads and made some good power. I used the solid cam for the 427 Fords. Use the high volume oil pump and put ristritps at the rocker arm passage.

The original engine was the 352. i had the chance to buy a 430 from a guy over hear but he could not give me any history of the engine. I was advised to stick with the 352 from a few guys on the forum and rebuild that is what i have gone for.
Not sure where i am going with the colour to many choices???

I may have the wrong end of the story from the guy rebuilding the engine i no expert myself and the whole thing is quite confusing although loving every minuet of it. Ill get a full update from him and let you all know.

Try finding some pictures of a dealer brochure or you may be able to find a dealer brochure to purchase on the auction sites. Although opposite of what you would like to paint your car - the blue and white one pictured below will give you an idea of how the cars were painted in two colors from the factory. The main body was one color and roof (hood or top) another. The brochure doesn't say if the car with the sunroof is Skymist Blue or Diamond Blue.

I don't know the color codes for the paint but there were two factory cars in the color scheme that you would like to re-create. (third and fourth cars from the right - top row)

Corinthian White body and either Acapulco Blue roof (a darker blue) or Skymist Blue (lighter blue).

I imagine that's Skymist blue. Diamond blue is much lighter.

Barry, take a look at my signature picture of my "Yellow Rose". You will see a non-traditional, or non-OEM paint scheme on her. I gave her the Corvette paint treatment, but also painted the piece the windshield wipers go through, the back panel at the base of the rear window, and about a 1 inch section where the top meets the body, all in white. I think that really sets the top off better from the rest of the body. If you need bigger pix I can post some later on.
