    shifter replacement

Several months ago I sold my '57 little Bird and decided to stay in the Thunderbird family and purchased a '58 with A/C on ebay. Car finally was delivered last weekend and needs some work before it is safe and driveable. Read some of the older posts that describe my shifter needing replacement. What is involved? Do I need to remove the steering wheel? What is the little "window" for on the steering column cover? I saw no details in the shop manual.

    RE: shifter replacement

    Welcome to the board.

The window on the shifter collar is to access the screws for the shift indicator and shift indicator light.

You will need to remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch in order to remove the shift collar and lever.

It is not terribly difficult, but it is a project.
