    Fuel Pump Problem !959 430 T- Bird

Al, Just returned from a 2,000 mile trip to Oklahoma City O K. Had what I think is a fuel pump failure. Could not get gas to the carb after the engine was running at high speeds 75 mph. When we stopped for gas or whatever the pump would not send gas to the carb. untill the engine cooled down. At one stop a bystander suggested I put cold water on the pump. Beleive it or not that did work. Any suggestions regarding an electric fuel pump or any additional things I should do to correct the problem wuold be appreciated.

I am definitely no expert on this but I think what you have is traditionally called "vapor lock". I say this because the cool water worked.

Various methods to counteract it might include: wrapping the gas line from the pump to the carb in some sort of insulation, re-routing the line to the carb, or using an electric pump.

I am sure other people on this site have other remedies.

Personally, having an electric pump in the trunk for emergencies seems like a cheap form of good insurance.

      Why did you bring your

bird to OKC ? Could have gotten you some help with it, if I had known you were in town.

yep - both Dennis and I live in the OKC area!
I'm a little further south though.

Maybe that would be a good item to add to the website Alexander: some contact info listing names, emergency phone numbers (for whomever wants to provide one) and location (city, state).

I was a memeber of the Galaxie club for a long time and they had such a thing. It would come in handy if you were in an unfamiliar town and needed emergency help with your Bird.

Al We belong to a touring car club. The VMCCA. We toured the O K City area for four days . Really nice country and a lot of surprises . The Cowboy Museum was a real treat. Really would have been good to personnly meet a local resident. We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Stillwater and averaged about 180 miles a day touring.

I will put an electric fuel pump on soon. Any recommendations ?

If you go into an auto parts store, tell them you want a "low volume" pump. Pressure somewhere in the 6 psi range. Get some spade connectors and you can build a T and tap into your switched electricity on the 12V, key, side of the ballast resistor.

What you don't want is a high pressure one for modern fuel injection...they might put out 10 times as much pressure.

such a pump is good for all kinds of things such as draining the tank if you need to work on it ...
