    Looking for 60Bird Questions

    Hi,

Looking at this 60 Tbird out of state, about 300 miles away and after talking to him, and seeing some posted pictures, confirms rust free car, drives great, nice interior, nice paint, and clean engine bay and trunk area. Claims everything works including gauges, Reblt Trans & new Started, no Pwr WDW & Seat, asking $10K. Slight crack in Drv window.

However, I think he said he replaced the valves, and notice something in there but couldn't get it all out??? Not sure, anyway, was honest and told me upon startup it blows grey smoke, and will also do that on heavy acceleration.

Is this something serious that I should not consider this car? I heard that sometimes in older cars (though never happened in my 60 Bird, the oil seeps by, and that's the result and its not a big deal other than its not a pretty site.

Any words of wisdom would help here. The price for the car seems good, for what I seen in pictures and what he described and he was very forth coming on giving me additional information about it etc. Seemed to be very honest.
    Thanks -Jack

Normally smoke indicates that oil is either getting past the valve seals or is getting past the piston rings. I've never heard of someone just replacing the valves. Normally a valve job also consists of replacing the valve seals, valve guides and valve seats. There's no way to replace the valves without removing the heads so I'm not sure what he's trying to describe. Is this a hardtop or convertible? I would call $10K for a hardtop on the high end if the motor hasn't been rebuilt. How many miles are on it. Have the suspension and steering parts been rebuilt or replaced. That's another large expense if it hasn't been done. Even though it may be clean I wouldn't put out that much money unless I did a visual inspection myself.

In the Technical Resource Library is a check list you can run when one is thinking about buying a classic car. It was put together by our members to help those contemplating buying one. You will find it at the bottom of the TRL, called, as I recall, Vehicle Check List. IF you decide to physically check that car out (and since it is not to far away, that would be a very good idea) print out and take the check list with you. If you do not go, use that check list with the seller over the phone and go through it to see what his answers are compared to the check list.. Doing this might save you from making a mistake, or... confirm that it is a worthwhile car..
