    Steering gearbox fluid/grease?

I was reading on here regarding the steering gearbox, that they where filling it with grease.
But in some old documentation i saw they mentioned to use SAE 90 fluid. Either way will be ok?

Grease and gear oil are two completely different animals. The spec calls for grease so that's what you should use.

Ok, thanks for that. I just asked to be sure, since an original lubrication chart for the 1958 T-bird called for Shell Spirax EP SAE 90, which is a gear oil.
Will put some grease in there, thanks again.

I found the same info, 80-90 gear oil when i researched. I think it should be gear oil, not grease. maybe some one else will know for sure..kenn

The shop manual calls for grease. If you look at the lube chart in the shop manual it's completely different than the rear gear oil. I've had numerous rebuilt steering boxes and I've never seen any that had gear oil in it. Here's the Ford part number.

              Oil will probably leak out.

I used John Deere Corn Head grease.

I just filled the gearbox up with general purpose grease. The box was probably almost empty, but at the end of the filling process, oil came out from the cover bolt hole. I continued pumping until only grease came out. Was quite a thick type of oil and most probably serviced a looooong time ago.
