OEM Paint Codes & Matching Tbird Pix

I have not been pleased with the confusion of External Paint Color Codes and Paint Color names over the years I have been on here. If you look at the 1958, 1959, 1960 Ditzler Paint Chip cards, you find one set of Color Codes and Color Samples. If you look at Automotive Mile Posts for each of those three years, you will see different Color Codes and different names. It gets to be pretty confusing.

After one of our members suggested that it would be nice to have a set of Color Code Letters and Color Paint samples actually on the Tbirds that match, I decided to do something about this. So I went to the OEM Official Factory Specifications CD, copied down each of the Color Codes and the matching Color Names for that Code for each of the three years. These are the official Color Codes and Color Names established in the OFS. Then I went looking for cars that had that external Paint Color that matched the Color Code for that color. Except for a few here and there, I was able to find matching Tbirds in each of the Color Codes listed. In a few cases I was not able to find on the internet pix that matched a few Tbirds and the Color Code. I am hoping that ya'll might be able to find some of the missing pix because I would like to have all Tbirds with matching color, not a Lincoln, Mercury or other car that does have the same color, just not as a Tbird. Some colors are pretty rare, apparently, making it hard to find pix of them.

For example, I could not find a pic of a 1958 Tbird Color Code C - Desert Beige. I did find this pic though.

And this one for Color Code D - Palomino Tan.

And for 1958 this one. A 1951 Mercury, same color as 1958, Color Code K - Everglade Green Metallic.

For 1959 Squarebirds, I only lack one. This one. A 1994 Mercury, same color as 1959, Color Code Q - Sea Reef Green Metallic.

Finally, for 1960 I am missing these two that I found in Lincolns, but not Tbirds, though they were a 1960 Tbird color also, Color Code D - Sapphire.

And this one, Color Code I - Pale Turquoise Light.

If anyone can find Squarebird pix that states those codes and names on the Data Plate, or in an advertisements, please email them to me so I can complete this work using strictly Tbirds in those colors.

That 58 beige looks a lot like 55 Buckskin Brown.
A buddy has an original paint 55 Meteor and they look identical to me.

      Ray,
Regarding colors for the 59, is there a list of how rare certain colors are or how many cars were of a certain color?
      Thanks.
      John

PS. Here is a group of various colors that may be of help:

OEM Paint Codes & Matching Tbird Pix

Hi John, there is NO listing showing how many 1959 (or other years of Tbirds back then) Squarebirds were manufactured by Paint Codes, that I am aware of. However, back in the 1980's the Vintage Thunderbird Club, International (VTCI) conducted an Owners Survey attempting to determine how many were manufactured with the various Paint Codes and combination two tone Paint Codes. But keep in mind, this did NOT cover ALL Squarebirds back then. Only those VTCI members who responded to the VTCI Owners Survey. I do not know how many VTCI members did NOT report their Tbird for the survey. So it is not an accurate list of ALL 1958-1960 Squarebirds produced, but does give you an indication of percentages reported.

Then in 2009, the survey was updated and reported in the March/April VTCI 2010 edition of the VTCI Scoop magazine, Alan H. Tast, AIA, Technical Director of the VTCI (to this date, and also a member of our Forum) updated the VTCI Owners Survey for 1958-1960. He later went on include the Bulletbirds and the Flairbirds as I recall. I happen to have those issues, but it is my understanding that I am not allowed to post that information here. However, since Alan wrote the information, he may be able to tell us what his survey shows.

I will say this though, regarding 1959 Squarebirds the following Paint Codes have some of the smallest reporting. They are AE, CE, DE (Indian Turquoise), EC, ER, GW, H, JE, JL, LA, LN, MF, NE, QE, RA, TA, UE, VA (Casino Cream/Black Top, which is what Yellow Rose was when she left the factory), WG and ZE. In most cases, those colors only had 1-2 owners report those colors with a percentage of 1% or less reported. You can look those paint codes up on automotive mile posts website or others that have them listed. Here is the 1959 link.

        http://automotivemileposts.com/paint1959tbird.html

I will also tell you this. There are several owners here who just posted that they have a large number of past VTCI Scoop magazines they would like to get rid of. If this information interests you, I would take them up on their offer to get rid of them. Especially the 2010-2012 issues that have the 1958-1966 Tbird Paint Code surveys in them... Check the For Sale Forum... I will make another suggestion... If you are NOT a VTCI member, you should be, since you own a Tbird. The VTCI Scoop magazine publishes many, many, technical articles in it each year. Many of them are authored by some of the greatest minds and techies in the world of Thunderbird today. Like Alan Tast.... Since this is not a VTCI Forum, I am not allowed to publish them here..., Unfortunately...

You can also go to the Thunderbird Registry http://tbird.info/registry/menu.php and search by paint code. That should give you some idea of how rare certain codes are.

Ford offered many more colors than the standard charts suggested. In fact, I'm sure you already know this:

If you ordered police cars for the state, local or county, each have different colors that may not appear on the charts. You may say, 'Yeah, but what force ordered Thunderbirds.' I remember when Ford Motor Co., loaned Lincolns to the City of Dearborn for free. I have no idea about other 'deals' Ford struck. You can imagine there were many (especially with TV and movie companies).

We ran the first 'chameleon' paint jobs on 200 Mustangs as a 'special run'. This is paint that changes color as the car passes by. I understand the pigment beads are in 'elliptical' shape that reflects differently like the glass reflective beads in paint on signs and on runways only in color.

Taxi cab and some rental car companies ordered special paint for their fleet or batch orders.

When I worked in Manufacturing Development at Ford, we tested everything. We took a common door panel that was painted some common metal-flake color and sawed it in quarters. Then, we turned each quarter 90-degrees so they 'faced' four different directions. The door was painted on a car by the assembly line painter. Looking at each quarter I could swear I was looking at four different paints.

This taught me a huge lesson in colors. Hoods, roofs and rear deck lids are painted 'flat' while doors, fenders and quarter panels are painted 'vertically'. That makes a difference in how metal flakes 'sag' or orient upon drying in the oven.

If you're sitting in your computer room, look carefully at your wall colors. Yes, colors. The room may be painted one color but as light hits it and shadows form, the room will show many different shades in corners, at the ceiling break, etc. The same happens on a car. Character lines stop sheet metal flutter but they also create style by making shadows in the paint. I'm looking at Ray's 'Tweety Bird', painted a flat yellow. I see MANY shades of yellow from the front of the car to the back and from top to bottom.

My point is, colors only need to be close unless they are on the same plane. Otherwise your eye will never see the difference. - Dave

Ray - do you have this info?

Not much as far as actual colors or paint codes but it shows the colors all in one place with interior choices.

Hi Eric, No, I do not have that, nor do I remember ever seeing that. Is it available in a brochure or something like that, which can be copied? Do you have that brochure? If it can no longer be purchased, any chance of you copying those 13 pages in it and emailing it to me? I would like to have that for our records.

They show up from time to time on the auction sites etc. I've seen a few at car shows in the Vintage Auto Literature booths. I'll send you the one I have and if I need it back I'll know who has it -

I believe there is a deluxe or detailed brochure for each year model of the Tbird. Not sure what info is in the other year folders since I only have the one for the '60.

As he said, the original brochure will probably provide better detail than a scan will. Thanks for the offer though! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, and all those reading this!
