We can build them cross the river instead. And we have lots of folks in Southern right-to-work states who would take those jobs, so build a few more factories down here.

Something is drastically wrong with this article. Someone at the Detroit News is looking for sensationalism for a hot story.

Unions don't strike for no reason. They certainly don't want to see 'the company' lose money and go out of business, especially in these ecconomic times when jobs are scarce.

Ford has always worked very close with the CAW and together, they historically made good quality products at a good profit. This reputation is not something either side wants to tarnish.

CAW workers continue making the finest engines in the world at the Windsor Engine Plant. "The V8 Ford Windsor motor family is considered by performance enthusiasts to be one of the greatest and most successful engines produced by the Ford Motor Company."

Betweeen Windsor and Essex, Ontario plants, Ford produces more than 1.1 MILLION quality engines per year, mostly for F-series trucks.

BTW, Canada also produces some of the finest ladies in the world, oui?. In his early years, Henry Ford had a girlfriend in Windsor. Henry is credited with building one of the first internal combustion engine-powered boats to cross the Detroit River. Windsor, Ontario is jist one mile SOUTH of Detroit, Michigan. Yep, Canada is south of the US border from Detroit (look at a map).

Nobody wants a strike, but Bob King (UAW Pres.) said it is "immoral" for Alan Mulally to receive bonuses in excess of FIFTY MILLION in the past two years, when Ford workers have not received any relief from the concessions they sacrificed. - Dave

All three of Detroit�s big car makers might have to worry about historically unprecedented triple strike in Canada. The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union states it will launch three simultaneous strikes if it does not get satisfaction in present talks. But Jessica, what good is a car loan without a job? Right now, everyone who is gainfully employed is grateful to have a job (and a paycheck). Everyone including the CAW wants to see a boost in company profits to bolster security for the future.

This economy is still very shaky. Even Washington is uncertain of plans for the future. I seriously doubt anyone will strike for fear their work will go to the orient or SA. ..just say'n. - Dave

The Essex plant in Windsor is producing the 5.0, probably the best mass produced engine in the world right now.

CAW asked to keep working as deadline looms

Representatives from the Canadian Auto Workers union and Ford continue to work on new national agreement. The deadline for reaching a deal is tonight at midnight.

Urging solidarity in these high-stakes last hours, CAW leadership has asked its members to stay on the job at all locations. In an update this morning, union leaders claimed that leaving the job site would have "serious negative consequences" for the bargaining committee's ability to get a strong result.

The CAW is currently in negotiations with all three of the Detroit automakers, though Ford has emerged as a top priority for the organization. Ford has reportedly been more willing to consider the union's proposal of a lower rate and longer "grow-in period" for new hires, rather than moving to the two-tier wage system that has been adopted by the United Auto Workers - the two-tier system is still being advanced by General Motors and Chrysler. If a deal is indeed reached with Ford, the CAW will take it to GM and Chrysler to match.

Should an agreement not be reached by 11:59 PM this evening, CAW officials report there could be a work stoppage at "one or even all three of the companies." With the deadline at midnight tonight, neither side seems too eager to idle 20,000 workers. The CAW has asked for an extension and I am SURE they will get one. - Dave

CAW reaches agreement w/FORD, now GM, Chrysler

"The Canadian Auto Workers struck a tentative labour deal with Ford and extended collective bargaining talks with Chrysler and General Motors Monday night, temporarily averting a strike that would have sent nearly 21,000 workers to the picket lines Tuesday morning." CLICK HERE

The CAW calls this, "A **** good deal." They are asking their membership to ratify this four year deal into a binding agreement. "There are NO base increases... but COLA is reinstated (but not for retirees). A ratification bonus will be distributed, as well as a 3rd and 4th contract year bonus. New employees start at 60% (called a living wage) and it will take TEN YEARS to reach full wage. New hires will contribute to their own pension."

Ford will create 600 jobs over the term of the agreement; most of them will be in Oakville, Ontario.
