TBird Audio Records from 1958 - Want Copies?

    hi everyone,

I chanced upon some 33 1/3 LPs from 1958 that Ford had made, presumably to send out to marketing and sales people to better inform them about their new products. I got 3 altogether with the following titles:

Disk #1: "A New Kind of Thunderbird...A New Kind of Car" - side 1
"Selling the expanded market" - side 2
each side is about 15 minutes

Disk #2: "Servicing the 1958 8 cylinder engines" side 1
    "1958 Thunderbird Service" - side 2

Disk #3: "Steering System Adjustments" side 1
    no side 2

they are in quite good shape and I believe I can copy the material to digital format and then to a CD (there is 71 minutes total material on all 3 records). I dont see any Copyright statements on them so it might even be legal!

If anyone is interested, let me know. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I get to it. My email is: goulet@net1plus.com

Wow, what a find! I have never even heard of audio records for service or sales of these cards.

Please send me a copy. Thank you!

they were on Ebay...nobody else bid on them.

If anyone replies, let me know what file format you want. I believe I can create .WAV or .MP3 equally easily.

Thats great John... Although a .wav file is a perfect copy and .mp3 is compressed, because it will be spoken word, there will be no noticeable quality loss compressing to MP3 and it would be a big difference in file size. If you need any assistance I have the cabability to convert any audio file format and I'd be more than happy to burn up a bunch for any of our members who might not be able to do so on their own.

Count me in, MP3 is fine.

I think having them to download might be best, but you might have to check on the leagl technicalities first.

I have transferred the material on the first 4 sides to digital files. The last side was not playable but of the least interest as it is on steering adjustments.

All material is at the following url:

where you may either play or download MP3 files. I also have them in WAV format playable on any CD player to mail to anyone interested. I will be catching up on mailing next week.

The material is interesting both from marketing and technical viewpoints, depending on which ones you listen to!

              have fun!

Thanks John for doing this. I listened to the first record.

It is funny that they claim the 1958 Thunderbird has "new powerful brakes" when it has the same brakes as a 1957 Thunderbird, which weighed 1000 lbs less.

perhaps they were referring to the Parking Brakes...

Yes, the car has great parking brakes. I have not had one escape out the garage once I put on the parking brake.

From the intermittent bell during the recording, it appears that there were slides that accompanied these records.

yes, I'm quite sure slides accompanied them. Also a Quiz at the end!!

I noticed they mentioned ceramic metallic brake shoes in the first recording, perhaps that is why they say the brakes are better since
that type of material is superior to the organic lining most cars have. Is that type lining offered as a replacement shoe? I remember customers buying asbestos shoes because they were cheaper but they didnt stop as good as the semi-metallic because their cars were not designed for that type of shoe material, I`ve only driven my car about 1 mile so far so I can`t really comment on how good or bad the brakes are but I have heard everyone else talk about it.

The original brakes on the 1958 Thunderbird had a little ceramic disc on each shoe that was between the regular brake lining. The regular brake lining was split in half midway to accommodate this ceramic insert. The ceramic insert was supposed to prevent brake fade. It was a one year only idea. It probably did not work that well. The front brakes were enlarged for 1959.

Darn, I thought I was on to something, although I cant help but wonder if a semi-metallic shoe would make the birds stop better.

I think there was information somewhere that the total braking area (shoes) of the 1958 was no more than the two seater 57, a substantially lighter car. It simply did not matter to anyone at Ford, sad to say.
