Unfortunately you have to remove the intake manifold as well. Just mark where the rotor is on the distributor so you can put it back in the same place. Unless you have an engine hoist you'll probably need help removing the intake. It weighs a ton.

      Follow your Shop Manual instructions.
Pull the valve covers off, remove the rocker shafts but pay very close attention to a few things:
      • Take lots of pictures as you go.
      • Mark the shafts as to which side they came from. Your book illustrates a notch at one end of each shaft, oriented at 5:00 o'clock.
      • Keep track of which shaft bolt went where. There are only four bolts holding the rocker shafts down. Two of them are skinny and they need to be returned to the same holes.
      • Remove each pushrod and keep track as to where it came from (and which end is up).

Now, you can remove the intake and your head.
Take this opportunity to clean out your rocker shafts, inspect the rocker arms and replace any parts that are worn. All the parts are available at the vendors, in case you need any. The Ford FE is totally different from Chevy and most mechanics do NOT know the FE. Follow your manual and ask questions. We are here to help. - Dave
