I began to find starting difficult with my '59 HT. It acted as if the battery were old and dying. It would turn over with that Rr..rr....rr.....vroom. Finally, it wouldn't get to the "vroom" part. (Quit laughing!) I'd charge up the battery and it would then start. SO....I replaced the battery with a brand new one. A week later I began to have the similar scenario. Getting harder to start promptly. One day it started right up, though, on a warmish morning. I drove it maybe 10 miles and went in to a shop. Came out and it went Rr..rr.....rr........r. Got someone to hook up some battery cables and tried to jump start it. Wouldn't. Added a powershot to it, WITH other car jumping, and it would still go rr.....rr..........r. We let it continue for a while and I gave it one more try. Rr......r....vroom.
Today, it started right up on a warmish morning and I drove to the store, about 12 miles away. Came out and it wouldn't start. Walked to work and came back about 7 hours later. Started right up.
So, I conclude there is an electrical issue that manifests when the engine is hot. Any clues to what it might be? Is is the starter - the windings have some tiny short that occurs when hot? Regulator problem? Is there a resistor problem? Isn't there a resistor on the firewall on the drivers side?
Sorry for the length of this. I conclude the generator is OK since, if it wasn't charging the battery and it wouldn't start because of that, it would still not start 7 hours later.
