RE: timing marks on balancer
The timing marks on the harmonic balancer and the pointer varied from year to year. What year engine do you have? What year car? The 1958 and 1959 had straight pointers and timing degree marks on the harmonic balancer. These can be very hard to see, if not cleaned off. The 1960 had a single mark on the harmonic balancer and several notches on the timing pointer.

RE: timing marks on balancer
On page 2-6 of the 59 Shop manual there is a picture of the timing marks on the harmonic balancer. There should just be a plain pointer on your car. Be aware that the rubber on old harmonic balancers can shift so doing timing with a light may be inaccurate. The best way to set the timing is to go by maximum vacuum and RPM. Drive the car and if on acceleration there is pinging, retard the timing until there is only slight or no pinging on hard acceleration.
