Power Steering.. How much groaning is ok?

Have a 63.. PS seems to function ok, however it groans quite a bit.. When turning, and it seems like it groans just sitting there as well...

How much of that is "normal" for its age?

At what point might it fail?

And will I still have steering, just not power assisted (I assume?) if it fails..

What is the typical repair, and can I do it myself or is it something not to be messed with

    Thanks!

FORD P/S pumps groan. If excessive, most likely air ingestion or a blocked filter (in pump reservoir).

If my 63 sets for over a week the pump has more of a buzzing sound than a groan but stops quickly. If driven every couple of days no buzz. The wipers were on one time when I started it and they moved in jerks but the buzzing stopped at the same time I turned them offf - I just assumed the buzzing was the pump refilling the line to the wiper switch, but maybe not.
