I keep having pinging on takeoff under load such as climbing a hill. This is my 1960-430. I am running 93 octane. I set my timing at 3 and drive up the hill and check it again and the damper mark has advanced and the pinging is still there. If I set it at 6 degrees it really pings hard. Damper slipping? I set the timing with a vacuum gauge reading 20 and the damper mark is reading about a minus 5 degrees. I know the motor was rebuilt about 5k ago and the guy I bought the car from can't remember if he rebuilt the damper which probably means he didn't. Am I safe running it this way. It runs fine the 4bbl kicks in well and the car runs strong with no pinging. Who rebuilds dampers or is there an aftermarket replacement.

on the rebuild, I would look in Hemmings. Maybe exchange yours so as to cut down the down time...
I have run into flaky timing which was due to worn bearings in the distributor. Easy to check as the shaft had play (side) that you could feel if you grabbed it.
Have you considered plugs a heat range cooler??1958 Hardtop

New distributor, zero play in it. It advances correctly when I gun the motor. New plugs points ect. Its running great now I'm just concern because the timing marks are indicating a minus 5 degrees timing..concerned about doing damage to motor. It start on first spin and idles smooth at 525 RPM. I think the damper has spun-I hope!!!!Comment

So you can relate -- I have 430 with Pertronix 1, stock distibutor, FlameThrower coil -- timed @ 6 BTDC @500RPM. Car runs with no ping at 95 degrees Texas temp with A/C running. Using Shell 93 Octane.
You may be right about the Damper. If so, here are two places that I bookmarked. I like the first one best -- $98 to rebuild yours, with 2 day turnaround and lifetime waranty.
