    Squarebirds in a pile

Check out this old VW ad as seen on the Hemmings blog.

As they said at Hemmings, not sure how the pile of worn out American iron will make one want a VW, but check out the 2 Squarebirds in the pile. One at the top and the tail of another on the right.

DGS It seems like a lot of work to try and sell one (1) VW. At least the chevy junkers are more prominent than the squarebirds.

there is more style and design in one cubic foot of that pile than there has been in the automotive industry for the last 3 decades.

          Well-said.

And the few 'better' designs that HAVE come up were retro-designs based on those times.

They can have those overpriced krout-cans !!! All of em. Euro-pee-an cars are more over rated than jap cars. Sad part is they've had the American public fooled for years.

                  BUY AMERICAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to spend a few weekends crawling around that pile too. Lots of cool cars there.

Have to agree with that, at least on the Europeans. VW's are about the worst as far as reliability and BMW and Mercedes aren't that much better. Durable? Yes, but reliable? No. They'll go a couple hundred thousand miles, but there will be lots of little issues along the way.

Jap cars have been mostly good to me. My two daily drivers are a '99 Honda Odyssey and an '05 Mazda3 hatch. I had an '88 Pulsar NX SE that was a horrible little car. Loads of fun, but a real money pit. I also had a '88 Nova which was a Corolla in disguise which was a real good car and an '88 Subaru beater that wouldn't die.

American cars have been less than good for me. The list includes several rotten GM products ('76 Camaro, '80 Monza, '88 Celebrity) and an '88 Grand Caravan that needed 2 trans rebuilds, a trans replacement and a new engine to get past 150K. The good was a boring but bullet proof '93 Escort that went over 180K miles with very little trouble. The '92 Saturn we had was OK, but burned a quart of oil every 1,500 miles at 40K.

The Odyssey has been a mixed bag. It's needed 2 transmissions in the first 120K, but Honda paid for both of them which certainly eases the blow. The second was well out of warranty, so I was quite thankful. The flip side is that I'm pushing 160K and it runs, rides and drive at about 95% of what it did when I bought it at 40K. Almost no new rattles or annoyances. That Caravan felt like it was held together with bungees & bubble gum at that mileage. The Mazda's too new to make a long term judgement, but boy it's a load of fun and good looking too.

Anyway, glad you enjoyed the picture.
