Walter Needs '55 Rear Wheel Well Tubs

We have a new user on the Forum in Walter, who happens to live in my city. He is restoring his '55 Babybird, and finds that the rear wheel well tubs are pretty rusted. Thanks to Joe Johnston and others, I have contacted about a half dozen known suppliers of Babybird parts. However, so far we have not had any success in finding these left and right rear wheel tubs. I have been told that the '55, '56 and '57 tubs are identical, but the extensions on each year are different. However, I am also told that those extensions are available as aftermarket items. But the rear wheel well tubs are not. So far, Walter has only sent me one small picture of his '55 showing the rear end of it. He hopes to take some bigger, better pix of that area so you can better see what he has on his hands.

If push comes to shove, seeing that he owns a steel fabrication company, he could make those tubs but prefers not to have to spend the time and effort to do so. He would rather find a good set and replace what is there with them. So far, I have talked with Hills Tbird, who is looking, Feno's, tried to get Bob Schermerhorn, but he is out of pocket, Tony's Classic who is also looking, Concours, no luck there, Gary Vukovic, but he is also out of pocket for a few more weeks, Prestige Tbird who is looking, as is Don Hyde here in Texas.

Here is that one pic and if I get more, I will post them for you to see.

what am I missing? It looks to me like the inner wheel wells are intact and he needs the edges of the trunk floor and the inner fender extensions. Those parts are available. I've been told that the best fitting parts come from CASCO. they bought the dies from a person who used to sell the parts out of Long Island. If the problem is his floor those sections are also available. Just remember the 55 floor is different than a 56 and a 57. (The fuel float opening is in a different spot from 55 to 56.)
Me personally, I found a rear clip and will be salvaging what I need from that rear half of the Thunderbird.

Walter Needs '55 Rear Wheel Well Tubs

Thanks, Steven, Walter has already spoken with CASCO and they do NOT have what he is needing. It is not the extensions themselves, but the entire wheel well "tub" sections on the left and right rear. He knows the extensions are available, but, apparently, the actual complete wheel well hubs are not. Unless you can get them off a parts car that is not rusted out more than his are. Hopefully, Walter will be able to take some more pix tonight and send them to me for posting. Then that might give ya'll a better view of what they presently look like.

Walter Needs '55 Rear Wheel Well Tubs

I am pleased to tell you that I have found not one, but TWO rear end clips! Actually, three, but that one is in about the same condition as his is. I do not have anymore pix of Walter's to show you, unfortunately. However, it appears that Walter will be buying the two rear wheel well tubs to replace what he has. The seller is going to send some pix so that he can get a good look at it, but his description of it is that they are in very good condition, unlike his. I will let you know how this goes.

I met a guy in Plymouth, MA who is selling 1955 Thunderbird parts. He has a numbers matching front clip and frame. He also has the rear clip. He has an ad on craigslist in the Boston, MA listings, He wants $2K for the complete lot of parts if anyone is interested. I think if you wait a few weeks he will be ready to start parting out individual parts. I looked at what he has but it really isn't anything I need. He bought the body and frame from a junk yard with intent to put it back together. He does not have a title for the car. He has now moved on to rebuilding a couple early Mustangs.

Walter Needs '55 Rear Wheel Well Tubs

I am pleased to say that I have found Walter his rear wheel well tubs at a terrific savings. He has looked at the pix of them, found them to his liking and bought them. They are in the process of being shipped to him... Another mission accomplished!
