Convert a HT 59 SquareBird to a convertable

I am thinking of converting my hardtop into a convertable> How will it affect the value? Is it a straight forward conversion to cut the top off and use it as a hard top, or am I just spinning my wheels. Will I need to straighten the body? Any helpfull hints would be appreciated. Do you know of anyone that has done this? I saw a picture of one somewhere and it looked pretty good. I have found a local car custumizer (used to work with Foose).

    hi
If you do a search on this site for this topic, you will find several threads of prior discussions along these lines . The key thing you need to realize is that a convertible has (from the factory) more structural support than a hard top in the main body because it does not have the advantage of the roof as stressed member. If you dig up weight values for both cars, you will find the convertible to be noticeably heavier as a result. None of this means you cannot do it or should not do it, only that there are other factors you may want to consider.

Thanks for the info, this is what I am looking for. If and when I do this conversion I want to make sure that it is done properly and that the structural part is taken care of. Again, thanks for the input.

I looked in the "Thunderbird Restoration Guide" and for 1958s,
the weight difference was 195 pounds. It would be a little different
for other years as different hardware was involved (more electrical
        gear).

And as I posted on another board you asked this question on -- I have pics of a zippertop that was done so well, you'd think it was stock.

You know something, I remember seeing a 58 BIRD prototype (factory photo) that had the retractable hdtp feature.

I also have here somewheres where a guy took a 59 EDSEL I believe it was, and made it a retractable.

The BIRD with the zipper top is one fine looking automobile.
