RE: expansion tank woes
I bought one of the ribbed types from Dottling Thunderbird in Az.They had em on ebay. Prettty good deal too. They are a heavier design. I will still have my buddy at the local radiator shop pressure test it,even though for a reman, it looks cherry. One trick I have learned. All the years my dad drove this car, he always left the coolnt level down an inch or so. Never fill the tank to the top. Then when it's hot and you stop, it won't puke coolant all over the ground. Keep a new flip type 15 lb cap on it. I chk the coolant level (& oil)every time before I drive it. Needless to say this car doesn't get driven every day. Once or twice a month.
Sitting still, I've had the needle go all the way to "Hot" and stay there. It very rarely boils over though. I just don't want it running that hot. But I do agree with you guys !!! What the H___ was Ford thinkin with expan tanks ??!! And that teeny tiny radiator? Have you ever seen the monster radiator that comes in a 62 full size Ford or Merc?? With a shroud . . . We had one when I was a kid. Never overheated once. Same eng . . . 390 2B.Even had pretty fair brakes.
Still . . . Gotta love the ol' Birds (Quirks and all)
