heater core replacement ('58)

My heater core has been leaking for awhile. I finally got to taking it out today. It is a previously repaired, abused, sad looking piece of junk. So on to replacing it.

In the interests of doing the job once and only once, I would like to know how to treat the valve on it. By this I mean: should I also replace it as they fail? are there gasket(s) associated with it to be replace? I have not taken the valve out yet...

Other: there is a fair amount of antifreeze in my carpet. I can absorb alot of it out but would like to know the proper way to go about cleaning it. It does not seem to have harmed the carpet but I know the stuff does not evaporate... I dont really want to take the
carpet out of the car.

The heater core and the valve for the heater core are now available in reproduction. There is a gasket between the heater core and the valve.

Antifreeze - ethylene glycol and the green color are water-soluble. If you don't want to remove the carpet, you can use a carpet steam cleaner. However, it is inevitable that the antifreeze has already soaked through the carpeting to the padding below. You will never get rid of this unless you remove the carpet.

If the valve is not corroded or leaking, you do not need to replace it. Until they were recently reproduced, they were difficult to find.
