When in a forward gear I need to accelerate more to make the car move. When in reverse gear the car will move in idle. The car is on a flat even surface. The emergency brake is off. I have driven the car 20 are 30 miles without any smoke from the wheels Could the emergency brake be the problem

Jack the rear wheels just off the ground and spin them by hand. You may have a tight rear brake adjustment and it could be from drum rust.
