Oh, how far things have come. NASCAR, as you may have heard, traces its roots back to moonshiners trying to outrun police cars. Now it'll be the stock cars chasing after the police when NASCAR rounds out the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The vehicles in question are Ford's latest "purpose-built" Police Interceptors - the Taurus-based sedan and Explorer-based utility - which Dearborn rolled out last year to replace the old-school Crown Victoria-based squad cars patrolling America's highways and city streets. The pair have been selected, much to the anticipated delight of race-loving cops, to serve as the pace cars for the upcoming Ford Championship Weekend, where all three of NASCAR's major series - Camping World trucks, Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup - wrap up their seasons.

It's not the first time, of course, that Fords have been used as pace cars in NASCAR - far from it - but while the Focus, Explorer, Fusion Hybrid and Mustang GT have all taken their turn recently as what they'd call "safety cars" overseas, this is the first time in the many years of leading the field in law enforcement vehicles that Ford will use its cop cars for the task.Continue reading Ford Police Interceptor vehicles pacing NASCAR races in Miami

The 2010 Crown Vic Police Interceptor still used the 210-horsepower, 4.6-liter V-8 engine. The new Police Interceptor and Police Interceptor SUV will be offered with Ford's 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V-6, mated to the six-speed automatic. It makes "280-plus" horsepower, according to Ford, is E85 flexible, and goes 20-percent farther on a gallon of gas than the Crown Vic.

Ford will offer the sedan (Taurus) with the optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost, which makes 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet in the Taurus SHO. The EcoBoost won't be available in the Police Interceptor SUV (Explorer) at launch, though Ford brass hinted heavily that it would be added soon afterward. Still, with the new models making at least 70 horsepower more than the old Crown Vic's V-8, many PDs may choose not to pay extra for EcoBoost and premium gas.

I'd buy one, for my wife, but she says ther Taurus looks dumpy. Like a cheap car and hates the back end, because one can see the frame & exhaust when following behind and it looks like somebody needs to pull its "skirt" down, and it's very small and costs alot, for a small car after all of the options are tossed on. So...we thanked the salesman & left.

Her mind is set on a 2012 Buick LaCrosse CXL 4WD
Really a nice car. The interior is drop-dead beautiful
she wants bright white with sddle leather, moonroof
and all the options.

She has been in 2000 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4X4 for 12 years.
It has 70,000 miles and is MINT through-out. Not a single door ding. She is like me, with cars.

There is like no mark-up, these days, on cars. She lists for $38,99 0 and best offered price to us, is $38,000 YIPES Minus $5,000 for the Jeep.
