Winter Project - Save Those Fender Skirts!

If you have fender skirts, you probably give them little thought. However they need some TLC in the winter. Here's why: being near the wheels, sand gets kicked up and collects in the skirts especially on the lower lip which is about an inch wide. The sand in turn collects and holds moisture. The skirts were not all that well painted on the inside at the factory so it is easy for them to rust. When you see a bubble of paint on the outside, the rust has made its way through.

So take them off, get out a hand wire brush and/or detail sander and get all the sand and rust out.

Once you have them well cleaned, cut loose with $5 and buy a can of RustOleum rusty metal primer and paint the them well. If you are fussy, you can probably match your body color with one of the RustOleum colors somewhat, but the job has been done no matter what the color and your skirts will last far longer.

Next fall, take them off again and blast all the sand out with compressed air.

    Happy New Year!!
