    W/S washer System

Anybody though of adding one of these to a 1958-60 Bird?

It is period correct, and I know for a fact my father's 1959 Ford Fairlane Galaxie 500 has this system, and it STILL works to this day!!!

      W/S System

On my 58HT there is a silver button on the drivers side post to initiate the pump. Over time, this has worked sporatically at best until I had it replaced a couple of yrears ago with another small activator pump. This was installed under the dash ( out of site but easily accesible ) below the clock and wired to the original power supply. Cost $12.95 parts supplier.

Even though mine does not work I think it is really cool to see the old technology.

Bart, on this design u simply use ur foot to pump the fluid! One line is an inlet and one line is an outlet. So in short, a hose runs from ur washer fluid bag to this pump. Then from this pump to each washer nozzle. It's very simple in design...

George ( Colonel ) old technology may be cool but what's up with the wiper motor system.. It seems to have a mind of it's own, working off the vacuum and you don't always drive up or down a hill, to increase the speed of or wipers. The good news is, there is not a lot of windshield to cover.

A foot pump -- I wouldn't have thought of that one.

I guess that the standard transmission people had to decide between the clutch and the wipers.

Mine never worked since day one. My dad kept a bottle of Windex in the Glv/Compt. He'd roll the window down, pouring rain on the freeway (my mom screaming at him) and squirt the windshield. Hare lare ious. Ah, childhood memories (prob the reason I kept this stupid car ---J/K) Nope . . . Not scarred for life . . .
Nothing wrong with me with me . . .

Actually, the footpump was a replacement for the original system which was a vacuum system that had a pump mounted on the generator that was driven off of the belt that ran the generator. You can see the drawings of it on this site posted by Alexander. It was actuated by that silver switch on the drivers side under the windshield post.

Really? A replacement? I did not know that.

BTW, what kind of warranty came with, lets say, a BRAND NEW 1959 T-Bird back in the day? Was it a 1 year bumper to bumper warranty? Today, with all the newer technology and competition, we have the standard 3yr/36K warranty- EVEN the 5yr/100K powertrain!!! I was just curious, it's probably in my owners manual, but I thought I'd just ask some "old timers" on here... LOL!!!

John that was a hilarious story about your parents so much so we can actually see the bottle out the window. It's amazing the things we remember as a kid. Thanks for the chuckle.

                          Windshield Washer

The one listed on ebay is correct for birds up to early 1960. I have installation instructions showing how it was mounted on the generator for the 430 engines as well as the mounting on the 352 water pump.

No the foot washer pump as mentioned was not used on the bird nor given by Ford as a replacement for the vacuum actuated one one ebay. I have not done the research to figure out it's use.

Vacuum ones are Neat gadgets but a pain to keep operational as the al cast pump corrodes very easily and freezes up..

The pump is vacuum actuated from the chrome swivel swirch on the left side of the driver. It was mounted into the cover just below the windshield on all three years. Basically push the lever forward applies vacuum to the cannister on the washer pump pushing it into the fan belt on the waterpump pully. Then the wheel turns and pumps washer fluid thru the hoses to the washer tips below the windshield. At the same time the vacuum activates the wiper motor so the wipers move back and forth. Neat system but a pain to keep operation as the whole system was activated by vacuum.

Many more details I have left out as this is a complicated system. Can answer ?? for those interested.
