I ordered a new pressure hose from Larry's and it came in too long. It was about 2" too long both between the pump and the frame bracket and 2" more between the bracket and the control valve. I've contacted them for a replacement, but I remembered hearing (I think) that these hoses can be made by any hydraulic dealer. Is that true? I'm wanting to get the car back together before the cold, so I'm not sure I want to wait for a new hose.

Well, Larry's says that I've got the right hose, but they'll take this one back. I tried one hydraulic supply place and they said they couldn't do it.
I'll try some other hydraulic suppliers, but anyone get a good one from another parts supplier?Comment

What year is your Bird ?
Do you have the one that was on your bird? If so measure it and call the vendors I highly recommend the Bird Nest they will work with you to make sure you get the right part.
How much to long was it.?
You might thank it's to long but remember the control valve moves back and forth when you turn the wheels so it needs room to move.
on my '60 I have a three piece pressure hose Late '60 I should say. Apparently in the 2nd half of the '60 model Ford decided to start using parts for the '61 Bird.
My set up goes from a 4" steel line attach's to a brass fitting on a 6" long I believe it's either 3/4 or 5/8" rubber and then to a 8 or 10" long 3/8" Rubber line to the control valve.
I tell you no one sells that 4" piece of steel tubing any more, the shortest I could find was an 8" piece ( do you know how hard it is to fit an 8" line into a spot made for a 4") allot of creative bending and I got it to fit.
(Hint for your return line use a length of 3/8" fuel line. cut a 6" length of 5/8" heater hose and slip it over the end at the control valve to protect it from rubbing on the frame attach it to the control valve thread it threw the rubber isolator on the frame and cut it to length and the pump)George (Papa of 9)

For now I'm just putting the old one back on. I think the bulk of my leaks were from the return line anyway. It had a hose clamp at the control valve end rather than a crimped on fitting like the new one.Comment

know your feelings
I to am finishing up a complete P/S rebuild pump completely rebuilt new seals in the control valve and power cylinder, and new lines.
I have 2 more lines to install and it will be completely done, if the rain holds off long enough for me to get out there and install them (control valve to power cylinder).
I liked the idea of the rubber hoses for this area but the fittings were wrong. so I got the new ones on Thursday but it rained. and by the time I got the new gas line installed for our new stove yesterday it was raining hard so no could do. not raining this morning but it's 48 dig. and the patio is still wet. once it above 55 I am installing them. I feel the need to drive!George (Papa of 9)

George:
Are the new control valve to power cylinder lines that you have steel lines, or are they rubber?
I have the steel lines, but I couldn't figure out which is the top line, which is the bottom line, and which end is which. The shop manual photo didn't help me much.Bart

Bart:
Yes I used the steel ones, the one with the tag and the slight bends go to the rear ports.
It took me about 4 flips each end to end not quiet sure how else to explain but after a few flips the fell right in placed.
If I get the chance tomorrow Sunday I will try to get pictures of them installed.
on another note. I guess I buggered up my pump got it all put in but have no pressure.
does any one know the difference other then the mounting bolts in the pump from a fount mount to a rear mount. Looking at pictures the only difference I see is the $100.00 in the price.George (Papa of 9)
