How many horsepower can one belt drive?
Here's the formulas:
- 746-Watts = 1 electrical horsepower
- Power (in Watts) = Current times Voltage
So, let's say you have an alternator that produces 100-Amps.
100-Amps times 12-Volts =1,200-Watts.
1,200 divided by 746 = 1.6-horsepower.
The pulley is only 2.5" in diameter so more belt surface area (traction) is necessary or the belt will slip and squeal. - DaveMember, Sons of the American Revolution
