My Black Golde Top was one of a handful of cars chosen for the the annual Halloween parade down Myrtle Avenue in Glendale, New York. There were thousands of people down the parade route. Most were in costume. People were shouting - "That's the Batmobile!". One person asked if it was a real car. I wanted to say, "it is more real than your Hyundai."
The parade was organized by the Kiwanis club. The president-elect rode in my car along with my niece.
This 1967 Chevy form the East Coast Car Association. It is loaded with period trinkets inside and out and features an under-dash 45 rpm record player. It also can throw 6-foot flames out its tailpipes. Luckily I did not need to follow this car.
A witch posing behind the Halloween Golde Top. Note the custom magnets that make the T-Bird emblems look like bats, the vampire bobble-head and the "BLD SUKR" license plate.
I rushed all day to do my job and get the car prepped for the parade. I forgot to eat lunch and dinner. I only had a bowl of cereal in the morning. I am not counting the midnight blood meal.
I and my niece had a lot of fun during this parade.
Elvira drove a 1959 Thunderbird parade convertible. If you notice, in the movie, the trunk opens up like a hardtop, and the car is never shown with the top up. The Monogram model that was made was based on the 1958 Thunderbird Hard Top that they had been making continuously since 1964. In the movie La Bamba, Richie Valens drives a 1959 Thunderbird Convertible. Again, Monogram released a La Bamba model that was a 1958 Thunderbird, not a 1959.
When Johnny Lighting released a 1/64 diecast of the Macabremobile, they must have based it on the Monogram model instead of the real car, because again it was a 1958. Johnny Lightning did not even have a regular 1958 Thunderbird model out yet.
Hmmm, maybe I can do something with the grille next year.
What people do not realize that one Batmobile was made privately in the 1960's based on a 1958 Thunderbird. George Barris, the creator of the original Batmobile was able to gain ownership of this car through a lawsuit against the owner of this car who was showing the car for a fee. http://www.javelinamx.com/Batmobile/batcar5.htm
All very good info. So it ElVira's WAS a 59?? That grille would be a great addn to your Batbird. Nothing is as cool as a stock 59 grille though. Don't you think? Have you ever done a quick bumper swap onto your 60 when nobody was looking?
You know in William Wonders book they show a 58 (the dash) that was suppose to have been owned by Richie Valens???
Nice pic's of your event. I was wondering if you saw the beach boys movie on VH1 They drove there fathers T-bird and if you look close there is something wrong with the pic, there are three lights in the rear however there is something there that doesen't quite jiv.
Definitely the Macabremobile was a '59. White instruments, horizontal grill behind the tail lights and the spear on the door. It also has the power brake booster on the firewall, indicating it may be a late 1959.
