    1960 Convertible top light survey

I'm not sure how many 1960 convertible owners we have here, but I am curious as to whether or not you have a top indicator light on your dash. I believe it was optional but have not seen it mentioned in any options lists. Do you have one???

Jerry, according to Automotive Mile Posts, there was a Deck Lid Open Warming Light ($4.80) that was optional equipment for the 1960 Squarebird. Here is the Optional List.

Of the 10 or so 60 Convertibles that I've owned I've only seen 2 equipped with the deck warning light.

I've had 4 or 5 60's and none of them had the light.

Thanks for finding that! It's the first time I've seen it listed.

My deck light is located below the top switch in that panel to the right of the steering column.

I've got one, but it's not functional. I haven't looked into why, could be just a bad bulb.

Some pictures of it along with the switch in the driver's side of the trunk that activates it on Flickr here:

I do have the warning light in my '60 convertible. It blinks when operating the top.

My 1960 convertible has the top warning light (it was produced in late July), but the bezel and red lens was missing when I bought it. I was determined to find a solution and I think I am onto something. Originally I was just thinking I might order a red 3/4 inch LED marking light like those used on trailers on Amazon, but I kept looking. Turns out the stainless steel or chrome bezels you can add to these marking lights is a near perfect fit for the bayonet insert in the original socket. For the lens I ordered some thin red PVC sheets and dry transfer letters on Amazon (gotta love Amazon Prime!).

So tonight I worked up a quick proof of concept since the letters I ordered were a little too small and tested it out. It comes on briefly then starts to flash.

If your convertible has the hole in the trim under the dash but you don't have the bayonet socket, I think the 3/4 inch red LED marker light could be modified slightly or you could make the hole in the trim a little bigger. The marker light almost fits into the bayonet insert which is 5/8" I.D..

Interesting, I believe that the build date on my convertible, also with the warning light, is July 26th. I'd have to go out and lift the cover and check the data plate to be sure. Sounds like our cars were built only days apart.
