    Gauge Plate/Glove Box Door

My two "sections", I'll call them, still have some of the matte finish but both are getting worn. I know the finish is not supposed to be polished, only the perimeter chrome edges. I see so many that are totally shined up, but that creates a blinding reflection when the sun is behind you. I'm sure someone has refinished theirs, and I'd like to know what was used...Eastwood's Argent Spray maybe ?

The original parts were spayed with a clear matte finish that unfortunately peeled, cracked and yellowed with age, so most people mistook it for dirt and then cleaned it off. I have used the Eastwood Argent paint with good result on my radio. It matches very closely with the NOS A/C vent that I have. The advantage to to the Argent paint vs clear paint is that it can hide some small pits.

Thanks, preparing to dis-assemble the interior this off-season and replace a lot of worn stuff. AACA show in my town next June!

I used an aluminumizer model paint that is made for hobby modelers. It is available at hobby shops and is a perfect color match. It is air brush ready and has a companion clear coat sealer that is also air brush ready. It dries in about 5 minutes.

Did you guys remove the gauge plate?... The glove box door is easy of course..but I'm thinking of pulling the gauges/speedo and masking (a lot) the plate off and spraying...thoughts?

I did exactly as you propose.

I removed the steering wheel, gauge bezels, and all knobs and trim pieces that I could.
I then taped off everything around the gauge plate piece. I even taped vertical sheets of plastic to isolate the driver’s seat area from the rest of the car.
Then I taped off everything else including the floors.
Literally I had a plastic and paper cave with the only thing exposed being the face of the dash plate I wanted to paint.

The wife came out and thought I had gone mad and was trying to be like Howard Hughes and live in my car or something...

It took me a day to tape it all off and an hour - with time between coats - to paint it.
A lot of work but still easier than removing that dash panel in my opinion.

Thanks, I did not want to remove the gauge plate...been there.

I have another question regarding the exterior trim piece on the sail panel ('59).. Do they have black stripes in the recessed lines?
Mine is completely polished chrome...I can't remember, and can't find a photo of one close-up.

Yes, they had semi-gloss back in the recesses.
