Has anybody had any luck in coating exhaust manifolds? I'd prefer something silverish but can live with black. I've tried everything from high temperature spray paint to chrome plating and have yet to find a satisfactory solution.

Howard, when I rebuilt my motor a few years ago, I tried to get this done properly. I got a natural casting colored paint from an outfit in NJ that was made for the job (http://www.hirschauto.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EMPT-PINT), sandblasted the headers, painted them and then baked them in an oven as the instructions called for. The results have been mixed. They still get some rust on them, on the one hand, and need cleaning. On the other hand the grey cast color has stayed on fine. The instructions said to use 2 coats; maybe I should have used more. But nothing flaked off, which would look poor.
It maybe I am simply asking too much - the header is sitting there begging to rust, with its high iron content, there is alot of heat, and I am in New England so from time to time there is moisture (like the last ****ed month!).
The headers are so small that one ought to be able to do almost anything to get the job done right.
I am not been able to get paint to stay on the heads right near the exit to the exhaust... different problem

Hey Guys,
On my 1978 Diamond Jubilee Edition Thunderbird, I use stove black polish. I applied a coat, let her run and get good and hot. Let her cool off and apply another coat. I did this several times until I got them coated good. They are now kinda of a gun metal silver or gray. I have had no problem with it coming off!

Hey John,
When wife gets home with camera, I will take some pictures of manifolds on Old Blue and show you the results. Remember it has been over ten years since I done it!
As you can see, there is some rust, but once again, its been over ten years and several thousand miles. I think it held up pretty good.

Thanks Cathie,
I need to get her out and do a little TLC on her. She has more sentimental value to my wife and I than anything. We started dating in this car.
The way people drive here at home, I'm scared to drive her very far. They drive like a bunch of idiots.
I get her out and drive her down the road, bring her back, wipe her off and park her.

Hey Rich! Thanks for going to the trouble of the photos!
Yours look better after 10 years than mine did after one.

Here in New Zealand there is a coating called HPC that you can get applied to your headers, manifolds etc.
I THINK it is some form of hi-temp powder coating (good for at least 700 degress)
I am getting the headers on my F100 done with HPC in a silvery - aluminium appearance, other colurs are available including cast-iron.
SO if it's here in NZ it has to be in the US I dare say.A Thunderbirder from the Land of the Long White Cloud.Comment

nope - they looked really good actually.
I think the key is in the prep work: remove them, sandblast them thoroughly, mix the solution very well (DO NOT SHAKE THE CAN) and run them on the motor thru a couple of heating cycles to cure the solution.CaseyComment

Almost any powder coating firm can do the high temp coatings. The most prevalent brand name coating processes are Jet Hot and as Scumdog stated HPC. Bot came from aerospace uses from coating the impellers and rotor blades on jet engines.sigpic
