X Games LA Global RallyCross race breaks records, cars [w/video]

Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Dodge, Ford, Subaru, Racing

Remember the old Rodney Dangerfield joke about how he went to a fight and a hockey game broke out? We went to a demolition derby held at the X Games in Los Angeles yesterday and a round of the Global RallyCross series broke out. If you don't want to know who won the gold, then you should stop reading now...

After all the seeding heats, qualifying rounds and Last Chance Qualifiers had been held, the grid was Sverre Isachsen, Patrik Sandell, Liam Doran, Ken Block, Rhys Millen, Tanner Foust, Toomas Heikkinen, Brian Deegan, Travis Pastrana and Scott Speed. A jumped start by Isachsen got things going, then Block played pinball with Sandell and Doran, got turned sideways in front of the pack and effectively ended his chances as well as those of Doran, Sandell and Deegan.

Even though Isachsen had to come in for a stop-go penalty, his jumped start kept him out of the mess and he rolled back into the race in fourth place behind Pastrana. Subaru hasn't had a good year in the Series and Isachsen seemed determined to change that, showing superior pace to Pastrana but not afraid to nerf Pastrana all over the place in trying to make the pass for third.

It was incidents like that - and Speed's mighty collision with Sandell on Lap 5 - that meant every other lap left another body shop's worth of debris and punted safety barriers in the middle of the course. How bad did it get? Ken Block did the last two laps on three tires and one rim.

The victory went to Toomas Heikkinen in an Olsbergs Fiesta ST, his fourth in a row. Heikkinen is the only GRC driver to win four races in a row, and the first to get back-to-back X Games gold medals after winning in Munich earlier this year. Behind him came Foust, Isachsen, Millen, Pastrana, Block, Deegan and Sandell. Speed and Doran were both classified DNF.

You can check out the high-res images from the day above, and watch video of the entire race below.Continue reading X Games LA Global RallyCross race breaks records, cars [w/video]
