Getting to my Radio Speaker W/Power Windows

As there is something loose with my '60s speaker, what's the easiest & best way to get to it.

    Thank you.

    Hey Chris,
Remove center console is the only way you can get to that speaker!

Chris as Richard says, the only way to get at the speaker / wiring is to take out the console. Before doing that what is the problem??

be prepared to find a speaker that needs replacing as the cone has fallen apart with age.

I think the speaker is an oval 6x9" which is a common size but if you have to get one, be careful to get the right resistance. The various TBird vendors have the correct ones. Wish I could tell you what the resistance is.

          Hi guys,

It's definately a loose connection, as it crackles but no music when going straight. When driving over a bump there's music. When I make a Left Turn I have Music, when I straighten up, crackling. I know where the Speaker is & what I have to look for. My main concern is the Power Window Switches. Do they have Male/Female connections to unplug? Does the whole Consul lift without disconnecting wires? Orrrrrrr?

          Thaks

I don't have power windows but just with the speaker wires, I only try to turn the console on its side to work on anything.

Suggestions: remove your back seat or flip in to the back. Also put some blankets or protection in for your seats as the console has some metal corners that might tear upholstery.

Also consider putting some insulation in the front part which will make things a little cooler in the summer - the heat comes from both the engine compartment and the transmission.

Wires are connected to the power window switch block with insulated spade connectors. Keep track of the switch block orientation and what connectors go where. If I remember correctly I took out the rear ashtray and pushed the switch block up from the bottom. I've never had the console out so I don't know if you can leave the wires connected. Whenever fooling around with wires, it's a good idea to disconnect the + battery terminal lead. Many wires are hot all the time.

As I recall, speakers are rated at 8 ohms. They are readily available through the various Tbird parts houses. But if you have to buy one, double check with them the correct ohms on the speaker. I think 8 ohms is correct.

Vern is sooooo right. Take lots of pictures at every angle. You will be glad you did.

When I bought my '55 Customline, the radio worked. Looking up from the floor, I could see sunlight around the cone. It was totally separated from the speaker all the way around its frame, but it still worked. - Dave
