Gas Tank Fuel supply Problem -- Need Help

I took the car out for a short drive, and had to be towed home --- no gas getting to the carb at all.

After I got it home, I tested the pump by running a separate line to a can of gas -- the pump worked great.

Then I blew into the fuel line to the gas tank, and felt a little resistance, but I could get air through it pretty easy after a few tries. I re-connected the fuel line to the pump, and it started and runs fine -- FOR NOW.

I think I have crud in the gas tank that is clogging the gas line. I need advice on where to go from here.

Do I need to change out the gas tank, and the entire gas line to the pump?

Also, is there a filter or screen in the gas tank? I don't see that in the parts diagram anywhere.

    Thanks for any advice.

There is a fibrous gas fibrous gas filer in the tank . It can can get clogged or collapse. You can see it when when you take out the fuel lever sender.

      Alexander:

Wow -- I hate to ask all of these questions at once, but better than one at a time:

      1. Where is that fibrous gas filter -- at the bottom of the tank somewhere (would I need to drain the tank)?

      2. Can I remove that fibrous filter through the lever opening on top, and can I replace it, or clean it?

      3. If you were me, would you replace the tank? Or, what's the best way to get rid of the crud?

      4. What about adding another gas filter between the tank and the pump -- would that restrict the suction?

      Thanks

The strainer is at the bottom of the tank at the fuel pick-up.

You cannot replace the strainer. It is bonded to the end of the gas pick-up. You can cut it open if it is clogged. You will need to have a good gas filer for the carburetor.

Inspect the tank, if it is rusty or corroded, replace it.

Can I remove the Fuel Level Sending unit from the trunk, and inspect the tank that way?

And, what about adding another gas filter between the tank and the pump -- would that restrict the suction from the tank?

Yes, just remove the sender in the trunk to inspect it. You have a gas drain on the bottom of the tank to to make inspection easier.

The strainer is a co**** filter. It is really not necessary if your tank and fuel lines are good and you have a fuel filter.

This is a 430. I have a good fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carburetor.

But that doesn't stop anything from getting into the pump from the gas tank if there is no strainer or filter.

Do the replacement tanks also have the strainer inside????

Would it hurt to add another filter in the line from the tank?

I don't know if the replacement tanks have the strainer. My Golde top has one, but I never looked inside. My guess they eliminated this piece. Somebody else on this site must know.

You could put in an in-line fuel filer, but I like to have as few rubber connections in the fuel line for safety.

OK. Maybe someone else might know about the strainer.

I forgot about the rubber hoses with a filter -- catch 22.

                  Thanks very much.
